UFCW Local 400, 32BJ SEIU and SEIU Local 500 add to overwhelming frontline worker support for Jordan

Washington, DC – Over the past week, three influential unions representing essential DC workers including grocery workers, teachers, and custodians and other property service workers endorsed Jordan Grossman for the DC Council Ward 2 primary. They join nearly a dozen other unions in supporting Jordan’s vision for more equitable, inclusive, and affordable DC.

“It means so much to be endorsed by the grocery workers, custodians and property services staff, and educators right now as they serve on the front lines of this crisis,” said Jordan Grossman. “On the DC Council, I‘ll fight to make sure they get the resources and personal protective equipment they need, and the fair contracts and schedules they deserve.”

From UFCW Local 400: “In Ward 2, we endorse Jordan Grossman for DC Council. We are confident [he] will be a champion for our hard-working members and their families.”

From 32BJ SEIU: Key to 32BJ members’ decision to support Grossman was his commitment to push for an Essential Workers Bill of Rights, similar to a federal bill proposed by Senator Elizabeth Warren to create a legal obligation for employers that would mandate that property management companies provide adequate personal protective equipment such as facemasks and gloves to all personnel. It would also obligate them to inform workers if and when they are exposed to a person potentially infected with COVID-19 and evacuating the job site until it can be properly cleaned.

“The men and women who are risking their lives to keep us safe during this pandemic, need leaders who will take the necessary steps to best protect their livelihoods and health,” said 32BJ SEIU Vice President,Jaime Contreras. “Grossman understands that these essential workers who keep our economy running need and deserve essential pay to better support their families.”

From SEIU Local 500: “SEIU Local 500 is proud to endorse Jordan Grossman for D.C. Council in Ward 2. Jordan is a 5th generation Washingtonian with experience in the Obama Administration, D.C. Medicaid, and the federal judiciary. Jordan is a strong progressive who will bring our shared values to the D.C. Council. Jordan stands with labor and we stand with him.”

A broad coalition of DC workers have endorsed Jordan including the Washington Teachers’ Union, the healthcare workers of 1199 SEIU, the Metro Washington Council of the AFL-CIO, the transit workers of ATU Local 689, Carpenters Local 197, the hospitality workers of UNITE HERE Local 25, and the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union. He has also been endorsed by key progressive leaders, environmental groups and civil rights organizations.

Jordan Grossman is a fifth generation DC resident and former Obama Administration, Capitol Hill, DC federal district court, and DC Medicaid official. He’s running to represent Ward 2 on the DC Council to end corruption, fight for DC statehood and equity for our schools, and make it easier for residents to afford a home, find high-quality child care, walk, bike, or take public transit, and pay off student loan debt.
